Poetry Contest Description
Write a minimalist poem about goodbyes.
I have been reading many different short form poems lately and getting all up in my feelings with writing. Specifically, I’ve been writing lots of westernized haiku and tanka. I know. I know. Don’t come at me with how the haiku and tanka I write aren’t real haiku and tanka. I know. I just like the challenge of expressing big emotions with very tight constraints and the western version of those forms does that for me. Let me have my cake!
So I want to conscript you people to write some minimalist poetry about saying goodbye. Science tells us that when we are feeling melancholy/sad/depressed/like the world is ending that listening to melancholy music and taking in melancholy art helps us release dopamine and feel better. Some say it’s because we can see other people as worse off than ourselves so we feel better. Some scientists say it’s because of the perceived notion that melancholy art is more beautiful because we see ourselves in it. The fact of the matter is that when we experience art, we get a hit of dopamine from our brains. Regardless if the art is sad, happy, or just somewhere in between. And when we get a dopamine hit, we feel better.
Basically, I need you to help me get a dopamine fix! I want you write about saying goodbye. Goodbye to a love. Goodbye to a job. Goodbye to a pet. Just make it about goodbyes and make it gut wrenching!
I’m not going to make you write a westernized tanka (though you can if you want), but I am going to limit you to the 31 syllable count. A tanka has five lines where the syllable count goes 5/7/5/7/7. But I don’t care how many lines you have, just write me a gut wrenching poem in only 31 syllables.
The challenge here is to stop being so wordy and pack all your emotion into a single bite.
The rules:
1. Write a bite sized poem about saying goodbye.
2. No more than three (3) poems per DUP persona.
3. All poems must be 31 syllables. I will be counting!
4. Let’s keep it PG-13. Basically let’s not get all porn-y up in here.
5. New poems only
6. No collaborations
7. Link your poems from your personal page into the comp. Do not copy and paste into the comp thread.
8. Titles do not count in the syllable count.
This will be judged by me!
Here's a handy dandy syllable counter if you need one:

Goodbyes like
i.
....feathers on the wind.
I never thought you a ghost,
but you slipped away.
And all I can do is dream
of all the words left unsaid.
ii.
....raw, bloodied knuckles.
I imagined you solid -
something substantial
able to hold on to me
until I was exhausted.
iii.
....a wine fading bruise.
I feel the affect of you
right here, in my chest.
I’ve pulled your words from my veins
and let them swirl down the drain.
****
a non-entry.

Saying Goodbye
Saying goodbye to you hurt my soul
Was angry at GOD for whom he stole
Since then I haven't been whole
Perservering's my goal
Was angry at GOD for whom he stole
Since then I haven't been whole
Perservering's my goal

Death Song Saved to Voicemail
never said goodbye
you called me that night, singing
happened so damned fast
I never answered the phone
your death song saved to voicemail

happened so damned fast
I never answered the phone
your death song saved to voicemail

Goodbye.
One last word
and then you left
left the food on the counter
rotten and sour
left me in my matter
to swelter and falter.

rotten and sour
left me in my matter
to swelter and falter.
