Church

barren faith draws breath, and hurtles past
each silent pew, but I do not pity you,
'cause I have been you, far too many times.

is that the ring of a bell I hear? from some tower
high above? or the roar of an ark traversing
the sea, guided by the fine white dove?

no, these are fancies owned by foolish men,
and I am not one of them, unlucky me,
this knowledge will not bring happiness, sadly.

I realise our nothingness, and as I stare at that
black scornful book, I see my own reflection,
face twisted into an impotent rage.

I know better, but then so do most men with
an ounce of sense, though they live inside
the hospitals, and rave and rave and rave.

Another step on your stairway of gloom cranking up to a doom laden landing, Jack. Your twisted reflection in that black book will not fail to whet the darkest of appetites.
