Until the Grave

We met for the last time, mid-winter in the old orchard
twisted trees like sentries
silent, yet in tune with the moment

Gazing into eyes, such fleeting haunted jewels of time
where so briefly,
the sharp agonising daggers of hungry reality
could no longer etch the pain in our hearts

The summer that would always be ours
came flooding back.
Cornfield passion under clear blue skies
set out like a picnic on a fine linen cloth
with cruel circumstance
the invisible final course

I had cursed God
the fates and destiny
pleaded with the devil
for good measure
but nothing
would alter the truth
Our lives together
could never be shared

As we parted
I pressed the ring
into her hand
It had belonged to my own father
and many fathers before him
standing in a long line
history stretching back
before family began
And in that instant I knew,
we would never marry
there would be no child
I could ever pass it to

Turning away
even the thought
of another's embrace
already seemed
colder than death itself,
for I understood
there could never be a love
the equal of our eternity
