Just Me Now

I'm on 42nd Street after Dad left
like the world was deaf for me
I would cut cut cut
deep and shallow
deep and shallow
flirting
one step
from my final bleed

The fine lines
they're all healing now
for the moment
as there's no cure
but there's different veils
of secrecy

Another week
another blade
another sink of bad feelings
swirling down Mom's drain

I always clean
right under my nails
so no-one ever knows
not a spot on her carpet

There's extra homework
love you, Mom

But these deep cuts
if she really looked
she'd see I walk round
with them wide open
feel them bleeding
every day
and it's not as if she cares
that I'm only
hanging out
up here by myself...

Weather fictional or no, this is a truly stirring piece, a sad and haunted tale of isolation and loss. The line in italics was an inspired addition to the main narrative.
