Local Tar Pits

The sun beats down in retribution
Wilting all resolve
And the best intentions melt away
The heat has its way with city streets
The asphalt softening
The intersections reduced to tar
A trap for the deranged and drunk
Fuming behind the wheel
Now slowly sinking into black depths
All the way to the molten core
All those cries of fury and disdain
Now muffled in slow depths
And serenity, so long forgotten
Settles on the cooling ground
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Peace along the avenue
And quiet in the cul-de-sac
The sprinklers chime in as darkness falls
The mist felt as crows retire
And a warlock returns home.
