IN THE CAR
Slow as molassass traffic stop light
Up ahead a Semi has splashed into a pickup
MAN LIES IN ROAD
She says "I dont think he is going to make it"
Drop her off at her job. One down
two kids to deliver to school
Past Mcdonald
"HONK" .... 1/2 second...."THUNK"
disbelieving drivers getting out
looking at their TOYOTAS
WHEN LEAVING MCDONALDS
LOOK BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT

drop-off-kids
ten minutes later, pass back by,
the cops stand around sleepily
The radio says from my parking spot
Ooo Ooo child, things are going to get easier....

I was driving past a generally busy thoroughfare, late at night. Two cars, crumpled like beer cans that had met their end against a forehead, had been pushed to the shoulder of the road like tonka toys. Shattered glass glittering on the street in the rotating police car lights like stars. A fire truck was hosing blood off the road, making a red tide of it, to fertilize the grass. I rolled past in a state of somewhat horrified fascination. It's all a business, I thought, living and dying. Clean up on aisle avenue.

As a mother, I felt the tension of this all the way to school and back.
This is excellently written, and that last line over-spills in the irony
that it's one of my favorite songs.
