Some Friends
Some Friends
Memories of boyhood haunt my night
Wandering antebellum home property
In midst of Hollywood film production
Past Civil War movie set
Replicas of scorched homes
Rise in blackened desolation
Pals and I vanish into the green curtain of woods
We ascend bluff to railroad tracks
Gazing down at culvert water fall
I descend ridge hearing yawp of “stone him.”
Granite railroad rocks rain down
I take flight from hail of stones
Till missile impacts forehead
Blackness veils my vision
With a thunderous howl
My body buckles into bloody defeat
Rising like a wounded deer
I run with best friend
My forehead flowing with blood
He asks “Does it hurt?”
I reply “Only when I laugh”
“That’s not funny” he replies
Ladies in car laugh
Believing me hoaxing movie extra
Persuaded they ride me to hospital and stitches
As African American intern sews
he asks who did this to me
I reply “my friends.”
“Some friends” his words illuminate
