Boys and Toys

Can I get that toy?
I bet that's what you said whenever you went into a store as a child with your mom
Please?
Fingers locked in pleading
I'll be good I promise!
So in exchange for 5 minutes of good behavior while she got her shopping done, you got your toy.
The object of your heart's desire.
Something you didn't even know you wanted until you saw it.
You took that toy home and you loved it and played with it everyday. It was on your mind at breakfast. At night, before you closed your eyes, you thought about how you couldn't wait to wake up and play with it the next day.
It made you so happy....
Until the batteries died, or a piece went missing. Or maybe you just saw something shiny and new.
So, you replaced it.
Soon, it was like that toy never even existed. There was something else to occupy your mind.
Then you grow up, and your mentality hasn't changed. Except now, instead of broken pieces of plastic, you leave broken hearts in your wake.
Dead batteries are replaced by stress, missing pieces by the need for time and trust, shiny wrapping by tighter clothes and fatter asses...
You move on.
Walking away from something that gave you so much joy. That faltered for a moment, yet instead of investing in it, you choose to waste your efforts breaking in something new.

Darling, I am not a toy.

You won't earn me with 5 minutes of good behavior. I can not be bought with money. I did not come wrapped in plastic and when I speak of my maker, it certainly isn't Mattel.
If I put my time and effort into you, all I ask in return is a little investment.
My batteries run down sometimes. Help me recharge them. I might even break. Take some time and help me fix it.
If you put that effort into me, my promise to you is that I'll make everyday feel like it's shiny and new.
So here's what you have to ask yourself:
Do you still want to play?
