Revelations
I revealed myself as an agnostic to my brother-in-law today. We had both stayed sitting when they asked those who had been invited to stand in the circle to confirm my nephew as a member of the church after he was baptized and as we parked our vehicles in the lot near my oldest brothers home before the luncheon he made a comment about having a swig of vodka first and I jumped at the chance to ask if I could have some too. He let me drink first and said, "I have suspected you might be a closet atheist" and I revealed that I hadn't been to church for years and that I was an agnostic. I told him it gives me anxiety to come to these religious family events, and asked him to not tell any of my siblings. I feel we bonded in the moment, two outcasts in a traditional family. He told me my sister likes him to participate in the ceremonies, and he even performed the baptism of his son, which was weird to me but he explained that "your disbelief in 'magic' doesn't make you any less magic."
And with that, we met with the family to celebrate the covenants made by a little boy to an invisible god, and I was thankful for the spirits I had partaken in a pure gesture from a fellow non-believer, shared in an informal ceremony to alleviate our anxiety of the superstitious world around us.
And we were fed by the good word of god.
