Knife Attack
‘I wrote this poem in response to my upcoming surgical amputation of the lower half of my left leg (4th June 2015)’
The physical attack
From the surgeons knife
A blade he wields
With skill and barbarity
In equals measured
It is biblical in its being
Ensuring that anything
That offends is plucked
Out or cut away, preserving
What is good and wholesome
Surgery in truth is always
An act of desperation
The healer has lost his
True natural power to heal
Without violent intervention
Surgery is an admission
Of defeat and failure
It’s the raising of the
White flag, one last act
To prolong natural existence
Beyond that deemed to
Be given as necessary.
All this being said;
Surgery saves lives from premature death
Changes lives from pain and suffering
Improves quality of former lives ruined
Offers hope, where there was none left
Its brilliance should be held in awe
We should marvel at its magnificence
It’s capacity to cure most of life’s ailments
Vigilance is a solid human requirement
We must not become reliant on surgery
We should always question its validity,
Its worth and the surgeons motivations
For it is still an act of physical violence
A knife crime of sorts with innocent intent
That cuts deeper than we may even know

This whole poem...astonishing. There is a battle of two opposing attitudes here; each equally harrowing and powerful. David, this is an exquisite work.

Really great piece. I like how this started out with the defeated side of things then leads up to seeing the good, yet at the end a reminder of just how much risk is involved. All is definitely important to look at. Going in with such a positive and realistic attitude will hopefully help recovery go as smoothly as possible. Good luck.
