Untitled (For Erin)

I gaze into your eyes
and the stars in the sky
and I'm caught up
to the moon
But there's nobody here,
it's just me
and an old battered picture of you

Your smile's a little faded
and the city lights are
overrated
as they glare against the glass
that holds your memory
to my wall
when you're so far away.

And I'm still here,
sitting by the phone,
thinking of you
and I wonder if you're still there,
waiting for me to call
And in my mind
I've crossed this line
at least a thousand times before
but in reality,
I'm still just sitting here,
all alone.

The birds aren't singing today,
I've sent them all your way
to tell you that I still care
from a distance,
despite the resistance
of this old, stubborn heart of mine.

The winter nights remind me
of the chills that hit me that day
as you walked away
from it all
and you told me to call
when I finally
made up my mind.

I remember that day
the way I said goodbye
I never meant to make you cry,
I only meant to make you go away.
I imagined those tears
falling down your face,
falling in the place
where I once stood,
holding you in my arms
but now the tears have washed me
away.

I know it isn't fair
to try to blame you
for everything.
But my mind keeps trying
and it turns out
it's rather easy.
But I remember that day,
I never meant to make you cry,
but I knew, oh how I knew,
that it was time
to say goodbye.
