She waltzed into the room with a cockeyed hip swagger
summoned by too many nights
spents with the boys.
It was still slightly too sexy to deny
a lingering eye a little pleasure,
but there was only one thing
she gave herself up to
during late nights spent
in grungy basements
littered with broken glasses and far less
enthusiastic hopefuls
looking desperately
to not have to go home
alone.
Tonight she needed it badly.
A quick fix for an hour or two
before slinking back into her studio apartment
to brood over what was left of the feeling.
She knew exactly where to get it,
and as the broken spirits with their liquid shots
of reassurance stepped aside
to allow her centre stage,
every blurry eye in the place tried to focus.
The music started and a sultry smile
of satisfaction
drew across her lips.
This was it-the moment that would take her
away from it all and into a place where she was
the shining star.
No drugs were needed- only the bass.
Only the rhythmic hip swings
head bobs and thrusts that rippled through her body were needed
to start the adrenaline pumping
and ensure that at least for the next few hours
she would feel utterly alive.
The music was her narcotic
her lover
her secret hiding place
and so long as there was somewhere
where the speakers throbbed
and the bass line boomed
there was somewhere for her to  call
home.
