Mistral

The eye rages through cracked shutters
old women in black shiver at their beads
counting in threes as the moon grows horns
to gore the souls of hapless travelers
betrayed by providence on the road

Children conceived now
fret willfully until their teens
then race from the countryside like weeds
the chill glittering stars of their birth
scattering lives in far off cities

Wife-beating husbands
claim right to pardon from the courts
Fires will not light and cocks do not crow
fishermen grow sickly and pace indoors
while the pike buries his nose in hungry shadow

Pleading redemption from forgotten saints
faithless practitioners of the darkest arts
sink broken upon their knees
Pigs grunt curses
turn in the sty and forget to eat

Lovers cling to sheets of tortured sky
passion pleading mercy from the lion's mouth
its clear blue ardor fondling the knife
compelled at once to slice off ears
bartering silence for the blood of fools
