Dissecting Writers:           Ghoulie

The following questions are taken from a profile of Scottish author Ian Rankin for bookshop chain Waterstone's: http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/pages/content/1285/
Now all but two have been posed to the beautiful Ghoulie

What was your favourite childhood book?

A few come to mind;

Apparently the earliest book was a children's dictionary.  I was almost held back in kindergarten because instead of socializing with the other children at 'playtime,'  the only thing I would do was grab that dictionary and go copy it word for word, by hand, while sitting in the corner.

I have particularly fond memories of my older brother reading me Where the Sidewalk Ends.

When I was a little older the 'Dark Materials' trilogy by Philip Pullman and Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause.

Which book has made you laugh?

All of the Transmetropolitan graphic novels.

Which book has made you cry?

Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. The ending always gets me sobbing.

Which book would you never have on your bookshelf?

Anything by Danielle Steel.

Which book are you reading at the moment?

Alternating between Flim Flam by James Randi and No One Here Gets Out Alive by Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman.

Which book would you give as a present to a friend?

John Dies at the End by David Wong.

Which other writers do you admire?

This list could be endless, so including, but not limited to and in no particular order: Christopher Hitchens, Chuck Palahniuk, Augusten Burroughs, David Sedaris, Neil Gaiman, Ray Bradbury, Charles Bukowski, Nietzsche, Hunter S. Thompson, Emerson, Thero,  E. E. Cummings, Anais Nin, Clive Barker

Which classic have you always meant to read and never got round to it?

Beowulf

What are your top five books of all time, in order or otherwi
se?

No order whatsoever:

The Gunslinger by Stephen King
John Dies at the End by David Wong
A Dandy in the Underworld by Sebastian Horsley
Girl Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury

What is the worst book you have ever read?

Twilight

Is there a particular book or author that inspired you to be a writer?

If I had to pick a defining piece it would most likely be the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson.

What is your favourite time of day to write?

Usually at night, or anytime copious amounts of illicit substances are within mawing distance.

And favourite place?

My home, in my livingroom where it is quiet and the light is just right. I have also been known to write in the bathtub, sometimes it's the only place to get some damn privacy.

Longhand or word processor?

Whatever is handy, but my favorite is a typewriter (when it's functional).

Which fictional character would you like to have met ?

Roland, from Stephen King's the Gunslinger series.

Who, in your opinion, is the greatest writer of all time?

Does anyone have an honest answer for this? I suppose if you constructed a chimera out of Hunter S. Thompson, Ray Bradbury, and Christopher Hitchens I could have a contender.

Which book have you found yourself unable to finish reading ?

The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

What is your favourite word?

Defenestrate
