Image for the poem The Lady

The Lady

The sun rises in the East
And I rise from the West
Side of your bed

Still dead to the world,
You breathe in and out
The air where whispered promises
Were shouted last night

A facade in place
As I put on my dress
Draining color from my face
As I see
Your chamber's a mess

I am full of shame.

You vow to love me
Yet exchanged vows with another,
Now I am only here for duty,
My kingdom calls for a next ruler

They think me lovelorn,
Think me heartbroken
Some showed me scorn,
Some choice words were spoken

I stare at your face,
Peaceful and calm
I am utterly enthralled...
I am utterly appalled

You wish me to be your mistress,
My life with you shall begin
When the sun sets in the West
As you leave your Queen

But I am a lady of my own words
A knight of my own sword
Though in battle I muddy my dress
I am not just some damsel in distress

I may have loved you
So strongly before
But we both have knowledge that it can never be more
And your more will never suffice
For a lady that, for this kingdom, is making a sacrifice
