Short Ode to Emily Dickinson

The big house, so quiet and still,
Moonbeams break in through the windows,
And alight upon her furnace and her staircase,
Casting shadows, casting shadows.

Little woman, precious thing,
Standing here alone, behind locked doors,
Dressed all in pale and virgin white,
Prepared to write and write and write.

A thousand fragments she has here,
Pressed upon fresh reams of paper,
She never left her fathers home,
To seek a husband of her own.

Alone... Alone...
Alone with poems, books and letters,
Enormous correspondence built,
She lies beneath her feather quilt.

Running beside the carriage of death,
Which stopped for her some years too soon,
To carry her off to the heavenly noon,
And steal each fervent, mortal breath.

Careful woman, frail child,
Haunting the big house, quiet and still,
I suppose she never cared for men,
A lover to hold her now and then.

I meant that she was physically alone, and that her poems helped to alleviate this isolation and, to a certain degree, her keep her company. This is what fascinates me about Emily Dickinson, the way she thrived almost solely on her creative outpourings.

Thank you Priya. I've written several poems about Emily Dickinson because, as I said to Opheliac, her gradual, self-imposed isolation from society and the way she thrived on poetry fascinates me. Another one of my Dickinson poems, simply called Emily, is on this site I think.
