Prologue

Atop a high tower, set darkly against the worn and cracked stone, stands the shadow of a man. This, though it may give the appearance of a man because of the height and the proud stance it holds, is not so. The shadow stretches and alters and into the pale light steps a young adult. In the dull light given off by the moon, his silvery blonde hair gleams, brightening his pale face and his dark red-brown eyes. Across his right cheek stretches a thin scar, and he touches a finger to it absent mindedly. He raises his eyes to the moon, and at that moment, dark grey clouds slide across the pale sphere, cutting off all luminosity.

With a sudden flash, lightning splits the clouds, striking a trail of bright molten white before snuffing out into darkness. A mighty thunder follows, booming so loud that the boy puts a hand to one ear to help muffle the sound. A single rain drop slips onto his forehead, followed by more. Another flash of lightning brightens the surrounding area, and the boy looks out across the expanse of dazzling city beneath him, neon flashing at him from all corners as far as the horizon stretches. This was HIS city. This was HIS playground. HIS home.

Gleaming at the adolescent's hip was a long sword made of the strongest steel. It glimmered from the rain drops on its long lean surface and seemed to radiate with enormous power. The handle vibrated slightly, but the blonde-haired boy laid his hand upon it and it stilled.

Another figure approached from behind him, and he turned to face it. A small girl with short black hair was walking towards him. She stopped a few feet from him and glanced at the scar on his right cheek.

"You're late, Sofia," he stated simply, his voice a natural tenor. She couldn't help but nod as she sat on the railing surrounding the border of the top bell tower's floor.

"I'm well aware of my faults, Damien," she hissed, two sharp teeth sticking out from behind her lips and gleaming ominously in the dull moonlight that hid behind the now black clouds. Damien simply sneered and unsheathed his sword. At the handle was carved a cross covered in vines, which wrapped around it like snakes. Damien lifted the sword and pointed it at Sofia, who slid away from it.

"Don't try my patience," he growled, his eyes glowing blood red. Sofia shook her head submissively. "Now what have you learned?"

"I have found nothing retaining to your request," she said quietly, as though she were afraid to reignite his anger. "Even my closest sources cannot trace your father's whereabouts." Damien growled again and sheathed his sword in frustration. Fire erupted in his closed fist, sliding between his fingers and around his knuckles. Sofia gasped softly. He looked down and, realizing what he was doing, opened his fist. The fire turned to ash and vanished.

"He's just disappeared," Sofia continued. "Rachel and Michal have been looking, but I don't hold complete faith in hooligans." Damien rolled his eyes and leaned against the now rain-streaked stone. He brushed some wet hair from his face and said nothing. Silence drifted between them. Sofia sat there in front of him, getting rained upon but not seeming to care. Her hair was plastered to her face and her long black boots squished slightly as she slid down from the railing.

She straightened her black thigh-length skirt. "Well, I had better go and keep looking. I'm sure Michal is waiting for me to get back to base." With a low swooshing sound, she threw herself from the tower. Damien watched as she flew through the air and disappeared amidst the bright twinkling lights of the city beneath him. He stepped away from the wall and climbed on top of the railing. He leaned his head back and raised his arms to the sky, letting the rain drift down his face onto his black leather duster and upon his bare chest that was exposed to the
elements.

"It will happen soon, father..." He mumbled. "It will happen soon..." Again the handle of his sword shook, more violently than the first time. But when his hand fell upon the hilt, it stilled once more. Then, in a rush of air, Damien stepped from the railing and disappeared into the falling rain.

(This is the prologue of a story I'm writing. I need honest feedback as to whether I should give up on this or continue.)
