Traitor or Heroine?: Thoughts Regarding Linda Kasabian

You once were a troublesome, rebellious young woman,
Who forbade her mothers wishes and fled the homestead,
Fell in with a man who called himself Charlie,
And soon joined his close-knit hippie commune.

You had a young daughter to raise on your own,
So you welcomed the ‘Family’s’ acceptance,
But why must acceptance always come with a price,
And why were you unwilling to pay it?

Your father left when you were young,
And you hardly cared for his successor,
Do you know that your mother blames herself
For everything that’s happened?

You’d been such a clever, if wayward, adolescent,
Thus deepening the mystery of how you were ensnared
By the murderous cretin that was ole’ Charlie Manson,
But then he did charm so many young drifters.

Were you really unaware of his psychotic intent,
The delusion he called ‘Helter-Skelter’?
Were you really surprised when you saw the bloody hatchet,
And your gore soaked comrades all drunk on their frenzy?

How did you become one of Manson’s many lovers?
Even after you knew what he was,
How could you let that psychopath touch you?
Allow him to stroke and caress your body.

Perhaps you were concerned for your poor little child,
Who was then being held in the Family’s care,
Perhaps it was true that for her you were scared,
Perhaps this explains your decision to stay.

It is known that you avoided a second brutal murder,
By knocking on the wrong flat door,
You deliberately failed the mission that Manson had set,
You refused to break God’s Law.

But are you a hero or just some traitor,
Were your intentions noble and pure?
Did you ever really care about saving a life,
Or were you afraid to dirty your paws?
