I don’t agree with your friend’s concept of ‘dumb it down.’ However, I believe poems should be accessible to folks who aren’t poets. That isn’t to say our audience is dumb. They just have a simpler perception of poetry than poets. To make an analogy, as some of you know I’ve had an ongoing battle with the big C. And because I’m treated at a teaching hospital, (The University of Minnesota), I’m very fortunate to be under the care of more than one doctor, all of whom are wonderful. But from time to time, I have to remind them I’m not a med student and they have to speak to me in terms that I can understand.
This doesn’t mean that they’re smarter than me. And I can prove it. I’ve made at least $60.00 winning sports and election bets. “Suckers!”
I believe the trick for poets is to be profound, while not being pretentious. To make your poetry intellectual, yet accessible, to folks who don't always read the stuff. I sometimes wonder if we poets try too hard to please one another, rather than identifying with a potential untapped audience.

Almost every poem I've ever read wasn't 'dumbed down'. Write the way you want to, otherwise what's the point? Your not truly expressing yourself, your just whoring out your words in order to reach a bigger audience, but what kinda generic shit would they be reading?
If your style is simple, then write simply. And for fucks sake, can everybody insisting on dumbing down your work stop being so condescending? Since when have obscure words become anathema on a fucking poetry site?
