Amiri Baraka's- (Transblusency) deserves a mention. don't know if anyone is familiar with his work but his semi-autobiographical style lends itself well to the avenue of self-exploration which is how we all become fine purveyors of the unshackled word.

Alan Jackson is about the only poet i will go out of my way to read. Since the first poem i read of his i have been enthralled. and he comes from the area of town i grew up in so there's a sense of local pride

Even tho many held Ted Hughes responsible for Plath's death I regard him as one of the greatest nature poets ever. I was spoon fed on Hughes as a baby and his connection with the wild still always appears remarkable to me.

To hold Ted Hughes responsible for Sylvia Plath's death is to do her a disservice. She killed herself because she collapsed beneath the madness which drove her beautiful work, not because some man broke her heart.

I would face him, and say simply: I am sad that you are not strong, and do not swim and sail and ski, but you have a strong soul, and I will believe in you and make you invincible on this Earth.

I think many people asked questions after the woman Hughes left her for Assia Wevill also committed suicide - like Plath she too put her head in a gas oven.

And Assia also killed her and Hughes' infant child by holding her against herself whilst in the oven. But that doesn't necessarily mean that Hughes was a bad husband. He, like my dear ole' dad, probably just had a knack for attracting dangerously unbalanced partners.

Of course given that no-one in a marriage really understands it - except for the two people in it - we may never know for certain, Jack. Although affairs, divorce even suicide were regarded with much more gravity then due to their less ubiquitous nature. Lightning however still seldom strikes twice. It's very interesting to speculate had Plath lived what sort of tale she would have told.

I doubt she would have told any tale. I think she probably would have carried on composing her wonderful poems and diving in and out of mental hospitals until her obsession with suicide finally bore fruit. As her mother warned Hughes before they married, she was a hopelessly self-destructive woman determined enough to keep trying until she finally got it right. And lightning does strike twice occasionally, provided you’re a good enough target.

Actually, you are technically correct about the lightning, Jack - and the experts all agree that lightning striking in the same place more than once has very low probability.
