Poems For Jeremiah

EDIT:  This was a former competition, and majority opinion felt it best to have it open to continually add to, as opposed to it being a comp.  So here it is, moved to this forum, and feel free to take it in any direction you want on the topic matter--add a poem, discuss, and as soon as I see an online guest book go up, I'll post a link so if anyone wants to add their poem or a comment, you can decide that yourself.

This is a serious competition on a sad topic, so please keep that in mind.  In December, a 5 year old boy went missing from the community where I live, and he was finally found on Friday.  Unfortunately, where they found him was stuffed in a suitcase and thrown on the side of the highway, where he spent the winter, dead.

Jeremiah's mother and her boyfriend are being charged as suspects in his murder, and while all the details aren't available yet, here's a couple of newspaper links to his story:

So for this comp, I'm putting out a call for poems for Jeremiah.  Enter as many times as you want, no collabs, any style, length.  Please keep it civil, as we're sending up our messages to this little boy who will never get to grow up here on Earth.  Winner and both runner ups will have their poems published in the online guest book, when that gets put up with the funeral details.  I'll put them  in as "anonymous" unless you want your name signed with it--you can let me know.

Let's find some hope in this world that reminds us at times that there are terrible things beyond our control.

I wish I could contribute to this but I don't think I could give it the attention it deserves. Such tragedy

Here Madam Lavender is a quick draft, please by all means critique and make suggestions.  after seeing your prompt, just awhile ago, I had to tap out something or I would have never been able to fall asleep.  As a care taker, of two nieces, one two, the other five, I couldn't help but write something, anything, I just needed to vent.

Let Little Jeremiah Oliver come onto me
I will take care of his every needs
I will let him rest his head upon my chest
Whilst I rock him to sleep and stroke his head

He will be comforted by the many others
Corrine Erstad, John Benet Ramsey, Jacob Wetterling
And so many children that have suffered unto me
That don’t even have as much as name for you to see

They will all be with me
I am their loving headmaster
I am the ‘Good Shepard’
I will watch over them
Running, laughing and playing

Till their loved ones can come and pick them up
From the ‘Child Someday Care Center’

“Your Grandpa’s here”
“Your Aunty came”
The sound of happy little running feet
Screams of joy, hugs and kisses

Reunited families forever and ever
In this beautiful world ‘of happily ever after’

The Lost Children

a single shoe by the road
filled with rainwater
soggy with faint smell
of an earthy foot

a little girl picked it up
pour out the water
she looked around
wondering who it belonged to

she ran towards the field
at the other end
where flowers bloomed
and butterflies fluttered around

a little boy stood
picking at flower petals
singing gustily aloud
laughing when butterflies floated by

they looked at each other
tow headed boy black haired girl
shoes forgotten, they held hands
and ran around on the field

they chased fluffy bunnies
played with two squirrels
a little honey bear
a few frogs and a dragon fly

they chatted with a praying mantis
blew bubbles from singing reeds
rolled down the mossy hill
drank nectar from blooms

then they heard a wailing
they saw a boy wrapped
in a black shiny shroud
and someone crying

'don't be sad, Jeremiah
they cried harder when
it was me, that got ran
over by my daddy's car'

the two little shadows
walked slowly away
fading into the night
entering the lights

they heard the laughter
of happy children
playing on a heavenly
playground and they smiled

Jeremiah and Azlina
joined the happy crowd
they no longer hear scary
voices in the night, serving pain

Or felt the horror
of hands pinching and grasping
as they take their pleasure
from pained little bodies.

Little Jeremiah

Matthew 18:1-4

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

And he lies
At the feet of He who died
To save even those who tried
To end their lives

His tears fall
Reaching Jeremiah's wall
Etching beauty into everything
As the little child forgives something
We would all hope to forget
Entering the Kingdom of Heaven

Yet we will always remember
What was lost the day he left us
Unwillingly but happily
Grasping the hands of Jesus
As little Jeremiah explains to God
What it is to be perfect

He lies in roses
But does not lie to Truthfulness
When he asks what it felt like to live
And what it felt like to fly
Up to Heaven with open arms
And pray up to God

Our Father in heaven
Hallowed be your name

Your kingdom come
Your will be done

On earth
As it is in heaven

Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our sins

as we also have forgiven those who sin against us

Amen

JeremIah

Gone,
But not forgotten
Lost,
But forever in our hearts

Dearly beloved
We have gathered hear today
To see a soul at rest
Now in a happier place

The sunrises and the sun sets
Yet our minds always remember tell us never forget
This wrong done
That we are to make right again

Do not cry
For he has wings now
Let him fly not feeling sad of his depart
Let him smile with a happy heart

Though it was such a young age
That he went away
I bet one of his wishes
Is that you do not forget
How he was
Or
Who he was

-I can understand the pain from this loss because my cousin was hit by a car and hidden so the person wouldn't be trialed.

May I suggest this competition become endless? I feel as if another gaining something from his death even in the form of a virtual trophy may tarnish the profound mourning this competition has, and will continue to offer.

I'll spend much time on my entry regardless, but I will respectfully decline any award whatsoever.

Jeremiah's Song

He was just a little boy with
a million dollar smile.
his mother had no love for him,
children were not her style.
Where the hell is justice,
will there ever be a trial?
For the cause of this little boy with
the million dollar smile.
we can put a man on the moon,
throw a party at the bar,
make a thing of beauty from an old rusty car.
But, for Love, Hope and a Happy Home, we
could not find the room?
And we could go on for awhile,
why there was no Hope to spare,
no love to share, for a little heart of gold and
a million dollar smile.
He was just another little boy with
a million dollar smile.

I can see your point, and I guess I would ask what everyone else thinks--should we go with Tacete's idea or leave it as is?  My thought was to not have someone benefit from another's misfortune, but rather just to put and end date on this, close it out, and any trophy is basically being given back to Jeremiah, in the sense that we're posting the winners in the guest book, as soon as one gets put up (I checked and there's nothing yet)

But, we could also just post everything that everyone contributes to this thread, that way it's not really singling any of them out as being "better" than the others, but sort of storing up our condolences to present when the funeral arrangements are announced.

So what does everyone think?  Which would you prefer to do?  I'm open to anything and will go with what everyone wants to do for this one.  If we choose to go "endless", I'll also submit a piece of my own, since we'd be sending all the entries to the family.

Or, I can post a link to the guestbook once it gets created, then everyone can decide on their own if they want to post their piece there or not--whatever everyone thinks is best!

Post in here, your thoughts and thanks!

Through the Broken Window

The small child hides
behind the curtain,
peeking out the window
in fear and in wonder,
He sees so many things in life
he hopes to one day touch; the
blooms and blossoms of the spring,
birthday cakes and summer,
autumn colors when
it's time for leaves to fall,
(an innocent child's notions)
with his nose pressed to the glass
his breath soon fogs his view
He fears the movement
when he shakes and
the sounds of his emotions
on the pane he begins to draw the
little puppy he wound one day love
but Jeremiah will never laugh and
play with the puppy of his dreams
for the cold wind blows
(always on the innocent
it seems)
through the broken window

Sounds good and thanks RT!  I'll wait for a few more to give input, and that way I'll know best of how to edit this.  I'll probably move it out of the comp forum all together, and send it to "Discussion".  That way it will be removed from comp status, and once we decide how we want keep going with it, I can put that in the edit, too.  :)
