To say I will miss him is an understatement ...

I went to jujitsu class today and forced my sparring partner into submission three straight times, twice so fast our coach didn't see the wrist locks I'd apply ...

Then it was on to a rehersal for a poetry showcase I'm a part of ...

Ali was a poet pugilist who molded my mind and body for as long as I can remember ...

This is an early DUP write of mine ... I'll always love the greatest ...

Float

(A true encounter)

He floats within my mind
seeking unbound skies

His swagger stings
my soul daring me forward
for all my worth

I can still remember his greatest poem without pause nor reservation

He stood before a crowd
in protest of the war

Someone yelled,
"Hey champ gives us a poem!"

He stretched out his arms
as if to embrace the throngs
and declared,

"You"

Then, with hands on chest
and head slightly bowed,
delivered the final stanza

"Me"

At 11 years old I was invited to see him train

He passed by me,
stopped and looked within
my shaken doe eyes and asked,

"Are you good in school?"

I barely stumbled, "Yes"

"Are you good to your mom and dad?"

A whisper of yes again

He shook his head in mock

"You're not doing you're job young prince. Don't settle for good, work at great"

He did then with his hands and his voice what I now seek with mine
To challenge one's self
one round at a time

Thanks so much for this, Lobo, and for not turning Ali's passing or life into a competition.  This great man's memory is far above such a thing so soon after our loss.  He's given and left us all so much that will reverberate long after generations are yet to be born, and will also pass over.  And thank you for sharing your thoughts and your piece.

respectfully,
Jadey

The greatest ever bout..
Thrilla in Manilla
In humidity that surely would rival Hades
Two men in their 3 peat
On and on in primal beat
  Dance of feet
TKO Clay...Ali hero.....
I cried to hear of his passing
But to witness his humanity and true fight ..
A blessing..

"killa and a thrilla and a chilla, when I get that gorilla in Manila."

This is my favorite quote of his ...

The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.

This song was from the movie on his life titled "The Greatest"  ... He played himself ...

The song itself helped me as a kid cope with so much madness going on around me ...

Great tribute, great poem, love your words, brother.

I think it takes an incredible person to not only have been a world champion boxer during the 60s and 70s, but to also have been an African-American and an ambasodor for human rights in that era took great courage and heart. This was a man who won an Olympic gold medal for the USA, then went back to his hometown, walked into a diner and was refused service because he was black. It was not an easy time to stand up for human rights, but Ali took a stand for people across the world. He was a hero to many, regardless of their race and colour of their skin.

R.I.P GOAT

Greatest of All Time!

I bought some caterpillars that I'll nurture into butterflies and release in the streets of Harlem, home to so many great poets like Baldwin and Hughes ... but none touched me like Ali did ...
