I think it just means we're all more likely to be pretentious.

I can go along with that. I write a lot of humorous stuff but also on incest, child abuse and dark stuff from my soldiering days of brutality. Pain is sometimes easier to bear when it's bled.

I agree writing your thoughts no matter how dark may shed some enlightment or just serve as a vice

I disagree. Anything pretentious is bred outside of DU and smuggled in, stuck up some wannabe published asshole. You'll find pretentious writers, poets, artists and critics at any art gallery, writers group or arts school, where egos are spawned and groomed.
I think DU is a little different from other poetry forums and online communities. The dynamics and atmosphere is always changing, egos come and go, but in most cases, I think the writers here go through some sort of transition and grow in their own way.
The hard side of poetry? Diamonds are hard. Armour is hard too. Cocks and nipples get hard. Dead bodies are stiff and egos are malleable. I think DU has a hard side.

This really gets at why I posted this discussion, because I feel that a lot of people agree with you, but my contention is... cocks and nipples are also soft. So is living tissue and a vulnerable mind. DU, from what I've seen, has a very exposed underbelly and that is a massively good thing in my opinion, so I was kind of taken aback by the one-sided descriptor.

I see your point.
Perhaps the underbelly DU grew was out of anyone's control?
it is an okay flagship motto to sail on.
