I put on a good show for my family and friends, a fake smile, a fake laugh. Don't get me wrong, I feel happy sometimes too, but I want it to last, I'm only happy in the moments, but never just because. It doesn't help that the love of my life and I broke up 2 years ago but we continue to have a less intense version of a relationship.. It hurts so badly when you can't be together ..my heart truly cries and it am unbearable pain.sorry to be depressing, can anyone else relate to just wanting to be happy, for fucking good !?!?

Can definitely relate. But mostly, I long for a life less frightening. The longing for something you had can be a pretty soul-crushing experience though. Been there for.several years

Welcome to my world for the past 32 years.

I'm sorry if I come off as cruel but the sage advice given long ago still holds true, "the best way to get over someone, is to get under someone else."

Here's what you need to do:

Don't rely on others to fulfil your happiness.
Appreciate every day you have on this precious Earth.
Be thankful you're not starving in a shit-trodden hut.

Euan's right. Good cure for depression is count your blessings.
and go do something good for someone else.

"Everything that happens to us good or bad is only one thing and nothing else"- Paulo Coelho: The Alchemist

"leaving is not enough; you must
stay gone. train your heart
like a dog. change the locks
even on the house he’s never
visited. you lucky, lucky girl.
you have an apartment
just your size. a bathtub
full of tea. a heart the size
of Arizona, but not nearly
so arid. don’t wish away
your cracked past, your
crooked toes, your problems
are papier-mâché puppets
you made or bought because the vendor
at the market was so compelling you just
had to have them. you had to have him.
and you did. and now you pull down
the bridge between your houses.
you make him call before
he visits. you take a lover
for granted, you take
a lover who looks at you
like maybe you are magic. make
the first bottle you consume
in this place a relic. place it
on whatever altar you fashion
with a knife and five cranberries.
don’t lose too much weight.
stupid girls are always trying
to disappear as revenge. and you
are not stupid. you loved a man
with more hands than a parade
of beggars, and here you stand. heart
like a four-poster bed. heart like a canvas.
heart leaking something so strong
they can smell it in the street."

"There’s so much more to life than finding someone who will want you, or being sad over someone who doesn’t. There’s a lot of wonderful time to be spent discovering yourself without hoping someone will fall in love with you along the way, and it doesn't need to be painful or empty. You need to fill yourself up with love. Not anyone else. Become a whole being on your own. Go on adventures, fall asleep in the woods with friends, wander around the city at night, sit in a coffee shop on your own, write on bathroom stalls, leave notes in library books, dress up for yourself, give to others, smile a lot. Do all things with love, but don't romanticize life like you can’t survive without it. Live for yourself and be happy on your own. It isn’t any less beautiful, I promise."

I'm with Euan on this one. A friend once said to me: 'Bear in mind, there are no rules and you're on your own.' This is very sound advice in preparing you to withstand the buffets that life hands out. When things/relationships/life are good, appreciate them and enjoy them, but be prepared to pick yourself up if any one of these things goes wrong. In fact, I've written a couple of poems on the theme. This is one:

Overtaken by events

We’re often overtaken by events;
‘We didn’t see that coming,’ we complain.
But  gods of Fate are deaf to our laments
And heap upon us earthquakes, fire and rain.
We curse our fate, we shake our fists and cry,
But all to no avail - the waters rise,
The ocean heaves, the fire falls from the sky,
Our houses are engulfed before our eyes.
Some see it as a judgment for man’s sins;
‘Repent!’ they cry, ‘forswear your evil ways!’
But even good men die when Fate’s wheel spins,
And Death takes no account of pious praise.
So don’t let future fears bring you despair,
Just hope that when the tree falls, you’re elsewhere.

we make our own sadness and either we burn ourselves because of it or bury it with our own thoughts of fufilment. the choice is yours
