okay,i don’t usually start threads but i have spent last hour and half
doing the random poem thing(  long bus journey) and the amount
of cliche love poetry and sloppy erotic poetry on this site is astounding,
i wonder do these authors ever take the reader into considertion as they
write or is it an excersice in mental masterbation, now i am not saying my
poetry is anything wonderful but i try to get reader at bit interested in the poem
it seems that alot of writers sacfrice the fuction of the poem i.e create a emotion ,make a poltical point in order to serve their own internal agenda
taking no account of the reader,
i think poetry should be a two way street writer and reader in balance,
maybe i wrong but after reading endless love poems i think fuctionality
has be where poetry should go
not this endless naval gazing and woe is me crap
of course i could be completely wrong

There are many gems buried in the debris,  you won't find them in an hour and half with such a high count of members here. There are also many young, new and evolving writers here, give them a chance to grow.
I am ever evolving in my writing and when I look back at what I wrote thirty plus years ago (at my early poetry) that is when I see how much I have grown and evolved.

I prefer poetry that can reach inside and catch my breath but that doesn't mean every writer has to do that for me.

why do you keep spelling "function" as "FUCtion"?  Is this a new word in erotica? And is "excersice" an exercise involving ice? And "masterbation" a masturbation practice of male Doms?

So much to learn from reading...

Let them write what they will, so long as they are not flaming fellow DUP members. Some people just need an outlet.

Always believed that the words I'm trying to express decide the form. Kinda feel like alot of people use a lot of filler in their works.
(I've read 1000+ word poems that bored the hell out of me)
They had me hooked with the first few lines, but hating it by the time I.finished.

Not sure how relevant that was to the discussion, just throwing it out there

The function is always self-serving and cathartic in some fashion.
The 'form' as in the way it is presented to the reader, relies upon the reader being a somewhat hostage to the poet. The actual form of the poem as in the way it is laid out and the theme, is reliant upon its function as some styles of poetry suit some poem categories more than others.

Though I do agree with you. Personally I yearn for uplifting yet deep poetry, that is not somehow based upon some religion or faith or another.

Tell you what, you choose a poetry style, and I shall do my damndest to give you such a poem. Or rally the wirters to your cause and present you with a poem or two from others, worthy of praise.

I think some people have this idea of poetry as something separate from writing, something that solely involves themes of love, politics, or nature. Then on the other side you have the poets published in the big journals reacting to this by writing some sort of puzzle like poem that you have to "dissect" or whatever, written mainly for other poets. The poor reader of poetry, or even potential reader of poetry, is entirely left out of the equation.

The real problem, with this site and many others and maybe publishing poems in general, is not that people are choosing form over function, or vice versa, but that people aren't good editors and critics of their own work. The reasons for this are too numerous to even list, but it's the hardest skill to attain since it requires the most time, effort, and patience.

Is there somewhere on here that you can get honest, critical feedback so I can get better? I am new on this site, but that is what I am looking for.

there is no such thing as good or bad poetry, really. People like what they like...I look through poems and see comments like "oh this is the best thing I have ever read!" and it truly sucks in my opinion, then I read the work of the one commenting and they wouldn't know a good write if it bit their ass-in my opinion again...
point is-my opinion is just that and should direct what and whom I read ad enjoy and stop there.
If you don't like it, move on
If you have little time or patience to find what you like, too bad. A site like this takes time to uncover the real gems and it is well worth it if the effort is put forth.
If you can't put i the effort, look into the famous poets and read them, discovering new artists that are up and coming or show potential is an art in itself. Takes time.

If you want honest feedback -give it to others

this is a quid pro quo system, take time to give your thoughts o the work of others and they will usually return the favour.

Poetry is something all but impossible to define. And its purposes are just as varied and uncertain as its content. It has been described as an evolutionary peacock's tail, as an outpouring of the subconscious, as a therapeutic activity, as rhetoric or propaganda. I do not think we should try to limit poetry, to circumscribe it, to make it fit our own predilections. If you do not like cliches or love poetry then that is fine, but do not think that the function of a poem is necessarily to create an emotion or make a political point, though I do not preclude those. Poetry is a personal thing and therefore, by definition, has its own internal agenda. Poetry does not even need a reader, let alone to be in ‘balance’ with one. Much poetry is written, especially at times of heightened emotion, solely for the author, and is kept private. Poetry being functionalist sounds a tad Stalinist to me.

Hey Stagger !!!

You know how it goes bro, much like society, people do for self, write for self, and, then masturbate themselves .... for the most part, both, physically & mentally .... !!!!!

The odd soul thinks beyond their own Lil' world, but, I do mean, " The Odd One ", as in, the one in what, every 1000 probably ... ???

A lot of ridiculous, over the top, desperately lustful, soft porn has become the new ... " Love Poetry " ...

A load of Fukry man ... !!!

Don't sweat it bro, but recognise, a lot of folks like and support that pish.....
So, once again, we're back to society man ....

It is sadly, the way of things man.

Apathy and a need for some quick fix of self-gratification, is what motivates most folks ....

However, posts like this just nudge the fakers a lil man ....

Nothing wrong in asking the question ...

NOTHING AT ALL !
