I'd like to apologize
I would sincerely like to apologize to the cutting and suicide people that often visit DU. Though I still find them to be attention trolls, I’ve come to realize my response was quite callous. Since, I’ve come to learn that some of these folks do indeed have problems. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association has termed this phenomena, “Munchausen Syndrome by internet.”
Indeed, many of these people are just looking for attention, but some are harboring true feelings of self-destruction. However, the American Psychiatric Association strongly recommends that people using social media not to engage these folks. By interacting with them, even with good intentions, you probably are doing nothing more than reinforcing their negative behavior. Instead, it’s recommended that you report them to your web host instead.
I am truly sorry for any negative comments I made. But I’ve come to learn that best response, is not to respond to them directly, at all. I encourage my fellow poets to do the same. Best leave psychiatric advice up to the professionals.
