To me, not believing in a personal Creator gives an immense amount of freedom

And that kind of derogatory statement is what I have come to expect from most (not all) "Christians"
I like the fact that I am not brainwashed by religion. Makes me pretty smart.

If you read Machiavelli's work he emphasizes that religion is a great tool and a necessary evil for rulers and governments in order to install stability based on FEAR. Despite the fact that he had low opinion of it. He understood the importance of it.
He also emphasized that all men are bad and the reason they do good is because of fear, out of necessity and the benefits for themselves.
The word god becomes nothing more than a tool to emphasize and implement rules in society, when someone says these are the rules of god, most do not question the word of omnipotent, the higher being, the god.
And, for most of human civilization involving either violence or symbolic sub-junction, it has been essential part of point of transference between chaos and 'civilized society'.
As for hell, it really didn't have that much of an impact on people's mind vividly with all that we've come to think and believe till Dante's Divine Comedy. Before that the earlier churches didn't focus on heaven vs. hell but rather death vs. life but after The Divine Comedy in the 14c. in his work the way he presented hell as a place for torment for specific sins was a genius way of taking greco/roman myth and applying death and punishment to it.
Which religion is the best? In basic level and the core of it all is love, kindness and empathy, if we all come to understand and apply that uniformly everything else becomes nothing but a great fable..should we really be that much concerned about anything else if those 3 basic elements are adopted by everyone?!
btw, look up agnostics, their approach is a very humble and unique. They take the good of all religions and apply. Their belief is 'i know nothing, therefore why should i claim i know something when nothing is absolute' They do believe that there's something larger than all of us but open to hear without judgement.

nah, utter cods-whallop. that's the thing about quoting people. at the end of the day they're just people. anyone who starts a sentence off with or includes all men or all women or all people in one should just be quiet

Actually he's been quiet for sometime, It was his belief and whether you subscribe to his philosophy or not is not the point here..but i'm guessing you applied selective reading and missed the whole content, taking things out of context!!

Why of course, due it being the only part I am referring to. Less confusing that way.
Anyone who claims to know the reasons why of "ALL men and All women" are being very presumptuous, making their philosophy for me (IMO) lame.
I'm out also. I have to get ready for work.

mag,
mind you I never said those who don't believe in Jesus but divine power; which means it can be a believe in any divinity.
If you read my entire input you'll understand, I'm not beign biased about the true religion.
but at least believe in something.....
Even those that claim, they don't tie themselfs to a particular religion so as to be free, ain't. They are still subjects to atleast something or even thier conscience' take it or leave it. you worship something......

I totally agree with you Mags, the less you read there will be less of mental confusion. Funny that this is a site on writing and reading..and reading actually involves comprehension, processing information and applying effectively to the mental aptitude But it's quite alright, I totally understand your reservation.
Btw, he is one of top influential philosophers on history, religion and social classes..whether you agree or not.

I feel like my mental aptitude has just been insulted, due to quoting a part rather than the whole of a statement... Too funny
Maybe I misunderstood and what do I care anyway.. Go for it, I'm bowing out, too busy for this.

aright, Vee. I'll hold my hand up and say you were wrong to get so defensive and subsequently snarky, and I'm sorry for that. for what it's worth I wasn't calling you crazy, more an observation on the tone of some threads.
I read the quote in it's entirety first time around. it's plausible that people would see the structure and discipline as an important part of maintaining a society, especially governments who like he says would utilise religion.
my point about the segment I had isolated was that even in the context of the whole post, that sentence sticks out as something unworthy of the rest of the paragraphs.
I've never read the chap, but come on: all men are bad ? and the only reason they do good is out of fear ? necessity and self serving ? he sounds like an outdated angry feminist to me, and that was my point.
anyhow, my apologies for the confusion. do carry on
