Stranger in a Strange Land
(a sonnet)

No one can hear the voices in my head
No one can hope to understand the noise
No one can know the ways I chose instead
No one can help the person it destroys

It’s been this way at least since I was ten
Their constantly debating forth and back
But when I drank it stopped, but only then
And then I’d wake to know their full attack

But forty years of this and something more
Have brought me to the place where answers are
I’m sick not broken like I thought before
I can get well with help that’s worked so far.

Then one more place to go where love’s bestowed
With her and where I’m headed on the road.

"Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein
"On the Road" by Jack Kerouac

Geoff, I love your choice for the title book 😀  I did a book report on Stranger In  A Strange Land in 9th grade.  The teacher was appalled at my choice of reading material, lol.  I still have that and many more of his on my bookshelf.  Somehow I've never gotten around to reading On the Road.

Sonnets are a huge PITA for me, much respect 😎

Stranger in a Strange Land and Time Enough for Love were two of my favorite books at the time... before things turned weird and paranoid and I started reading all those Philip K. Dick stories...

As for the sonnet, I bow, they are my chosen form...

This was a tough choice for me.  Congrats Calli, I felt your piece was the seamless from title to end, the emotions expressed in such a simple and controlled way made them even more powerful for me.

Lobo, really great piece, I love the story, the flow, the feel and your ball in gave me a big grin.  Another excellent piece.

Katja, your piece grabbed me, it had a great 50's noir film feel for me and I love the idea presented that our expectations about children have nothing to do with who our children are or become.

Thank you! Your bookend form is such an inspired idea, and a fun challenge to write. The second title grabbed me as an end line, and it took a bit to settle on a title and get from point A to point B.

Congratulations Lobo and Katja! Such good pieces.

And, Honey, I have to say I adored yours.

Thank you. I'll get an avatar at some point, as soon as I find one I like.
