Bitter Love
the lesson we never learn
stupid me, knowing i can’t swim
now dragged underwater with weights on my ankles
conveniently shaped like your hands.
the thumb circles my calf, assuring me it’s there and won’t leave
and my lungs fill with honey dyed fire
from the gasps i let out as each memory passes me by.
whiskey, whisk me.
take me far away from here.
take me somewhere she can’t get me.
if there’s one place i’d never live,
it’d be my own head
as my nightmares have run amok
my dreams now reside in the ground.
stupid me, knowing i’m just a man
my feelings are overrun with weeds that are too deep to pull
i’ll end up rooting myself and causing a bigger wreck
than the one you see in front of you.
when you held me that night i cried like a child
and you told me that everything would be okay.
is this what you had in mind? the fall out was planned all along?
yeah, i guess i’ll be okay.
just one more until i’m unconscious and repeat forever and a day.

bring me closer to God,
i can feel his hands take mine and guide me to the light
oh, shit, if i could fly i’d go straight to the sky
that you look up and love so much and i’d die to be
your guardian angel.
stupid me, knowing this is the end,
yet clinging to your ankles as though i could reprimand
the decision you’ve already made with no contest to vote.
my things are all broken and you’ve left me wide open,
hollow and empty inside.
you said my roots got to you like an old tree,
they dug and dug until they’d become one with you
now you’re cutting me down and there’s nothing i can do.
