She wants that gold and ruby ring.
I can't afford that gold and ruby ring.
She doesn't push.  She knows
I can't afford that gold and ruby ring.
We have lunch at the store cafeteria.
We small talk and serious talk
like we've done for the last 33 years.
For me, it never gets old;
even if I've extended my third shift day
to spend first shift time with her.
I may be tired, but this never gets old.
We have more road behind then ahead
and tomorrow may not arrive for one or both of us.
She survives the cancer.
I've barely survived my reckless years.

As we begin to leave,
I stop at the jewelery counter
and buy that gold and ruby ring.

Grace Of The Lions, Glory Of The Ravens

within a roar, the ground will tremble
the bones will shake,
the animals that were in stupor
will now be encouraged
far off in the horizon, the black swarm of justice
intercedes the procession of sunshine
the time for engagement has occurred
the forces of nature and the freaks of chaos
have gathered around the pit
there is no remorse left, only the celebration of death
the lions corralled
the ravens convened
the meaning of this is that the glory will bleed

Rolling Back The Odometer

Gasping
He pleaded,
Come on, Christine
I know you can do it!
There are plenty of miles left in you
If I needed anyone more in my life ...

And he threw his weight into her rear end
Thrusting with straining thighs
Pushing with what little strength he could muster
Until his back felt as if it was breaking

Syrupy cylinders began to fire
Despite sawdust in her oil
Pistons turned over
Punctured tires began to roll
And shattered headlights beamed

When the door swung open
She was cherry
Pristine once again

And Christine
Beckoned him to come inside her
For the ride of his life

Those shitters would never get the best of them
As long as they were together

Into her Daddy's Home

the last light
she will see tonight
flickering candles
against the darkness

she knows she will
leave and travel
without her luggage
without her backpack

she whispers her goodbye
to all around her
the caped man arrives
and she closes her eyes

she feels his love
her daddy's warmth
in the light she wakes
in her daddy's arms

you waited daddy
she says
he nods and hugs
her healed body.

gratuitous

a thank you was
much less valuable
than the gift
itself.

I said that I'd
repay the debt,
but you said
that my response
alone
was enough to
cover it.

I AM NOT SAINT PAUL

A song about agape,
but sexless,
lust-less,
first and foremost
without myself in it.
If it's not me,
whose is this voice I hear then?
250 words,
250 words too many,
none of them
could describe me,
(Sorry, I'm not Saint Paul,
I am not writing "Corinthians B" in here,
admirable words, indeed,
but I doubt whether
he could get a stiff),
I, on the other hand
would like to fuck
the whole universe,
Agape,
oh Agape,
what have they done to you?

‘What do you need?’ you ask me and each time you do,
a new moon spins between earth and sun, and the pull
in between is the sea swell on shimmer tides.

‘Tell me,’ you say, drawing my bow line closer.
The waves rise, the trance sails unfurl in a glow eclipsed
only by the silver-white sun lick across the surface.

Horizon melodies outline our eyes, as perpetuity rolls on
in slow strokes — sky… sea… sky… sea… sky… deep
heaves, gliding high on the crests, where lifted waves shake…

Foam crashes, breaking shudders, I’m immersed in your name.

Evelina (1976)

I am everything she prayed
I wouldn't be

Couldn't be
Because of promises made by her
to her Lord

I always felt she was going to her knees
just for me
Last thing in the evenin'
First thing before the cock crow

Yet
I stole from her

I'd sneak in her purse to take a few of her cigarettes
Blowing circles that my stick limbs
Could hula hoop with

I'd sneak in her frig and steal a beer or two
Trying to numb the wails of a boy
So I might be a man in her eyes

Stole her homemade wine at night
Playing cards in her kitchen with the cousins
Her threatening the switch if we made her get up

Yes M'am
We sang in chorus
And then kept drinkin'

When my father died
I needed to steal her dignity
Her grace

Her faith

And like everything else
My grandmother let me have them

Praying I would become
Everything I am not

blessed.

that’s been said
pointing us towards the way out - in
towards a direction where we’d be
together - to gather -  a gain

where the seeing eyes can see
taking on that embrace of
finite energy - that
synergy

from me to we

while anything of no import
either set aside or
behind us

what lays in wait?

more
to remind us

love
truth and any
uncharted honesty
those created experiences deemed essential
each placed within and
amongst us

where choices - are
and not randomly selected

time - events
measured - angelically  protected
to say the least, no longer
the beast.

blessed.

Morning dew
Wind runs through
First breath I drew
I think of you

Open hands
Light in my chest
That burns for you
Only for you

In your night
I am your sight
My eyes are yours
Be clear and fight

Blood in my veins
Storm in the same
Worth every pain
I give to you

Never a price
For the very last slice
Second nature not vice
I live for you
Only for you

The brass ring slipped
long before I could grasp
your fragile paper wings
in the tides of darkness
immortalizing your name
in dreams of endlessness.

Beautiful girl
Beautiful pearl

Dance in the fields of never-
ending beginnings, beneath
the halo of your grandfathers
enveloped with warmth of the sun
and hypnotic tides of the moon
reach for shooting stars to feel
the pulsation of

true flesh and bone.

Journey through vacant
eyes to my fractured heart
you will hear echoes of
forgotten lullabies, soaring
to the famine skies, pleading
for god's tears, wash the pain

of my aching arms, weary
without your soul.

Caress tenderly with your
touch. my face in your tiny
palms. kissing like sunlight
flowing in rivers of love
before returning to
ocean of newborn stars

to sleep in the ebb and flow
of constellations.

Float with the untainted
colors of the rainbow, beyond
this deceptive mortal world
where the language of love is
misunderstood and construed.
Purity drawn in defiance.

Fly my angel, fly. Your lovely hair
twirling with yesterdays sorrows.

Come to me in the twilight hours
of the night, whisper softly
in the hallowed caves of the mouth
Come to me when my blue bones
yearn for your feathery touch
Come to me when my fingertips
coil at the truth, patched with lies.

Come to me, when all hope, is gone.

so this is how it's done; if i only had an inkling, a small bit of this sincerity within
my repertoire
then all emoticons would simply melt from existence
forever deemed useless - i swar
