i'm obviously exempt, but here is one of my favorite coffee pieces that i have written!

for my husband:

let me fill this cup
once more before
words begin to linger on
the air

let me sit and think
and push the sleepy clouds
from my mind before
i must make words turn
from thoughts to
sound waves

know that i wish
for your company
but also for the silence and the
privacy of my thoughts
at the same time

i am sorry i am
complicated

i am a terrible woman
before the sun comes up
without the stimulant of coffee
i am nothing short of
a tyrant
and a bully

so come lay your head on my lap
let me peck away the words
that swirl and explode in
my mind
my second cup is
almost finished

Aromatic afterglow

Dark delight,as the first smoke curls up
scented smell flavours my nostrils
Waiting for the taste of temptation
to filter through the air

The sound persuating
Like incence of instant intoxicant air
My senses awake ,aware of the  aroma
Warm anticipation shapes my tongue

As pleading pores,wait to open
The velvet veins of incandescent
streams of life,floating
free,through me

The Cup That Got Me Fucked Up

I don't drink that stink drink
it brewed by devils
I lose my levels, my balance
I take chances for granted
bad seeds of delusion planted
on soil of sorrows, yesterdays and tomorrows
that drink, that drink
that drink that changed my mood
giving me false courage and false hope
I don't drink that drink
it brewed by devils with voodoo skills
it gets in your good nature
drinking it, heaven will forsake you

Arabica Cologne

With science it is crafted
An exacting formula
Of eighty percent double roast Ethiopian
Twenty percent three-quarter roast Kenyan
Whole bean, hand measured
Freshly ground, adjusted for weather
Wet hot extraction
Thirty seconds of thermo-block grumble
To produce dark bitter-sweet perfection
Topped with pupil dilating
Crema, like sun-tanned skin waiting for a kiss

With love it is savoured
Adorned with crystal saccharine
In volumes to balance bitter beauty
Gently stirred
Invoking hints of chocolate;
Dash of Earth and
An awakening acidic bite
Leaving hand crafted glory
Savoured joy on thickened tongue

In passing
Linger stimulating fragrance
Singular and distinct
Kitchen Cologne to mark
Ruffles of hair and morning cuddles
Lasting memories to well forth
Wholesome fatherly impressions
Gladdening childhood reminiscence
Of coffee-brown residues in stainless steel cups

still have a little time to get on the caffeine fueled frenzy!

i need you like i need
espresso in the morning
(and if you know me
at all
you know that need
spans the very
reaches of my heart)

the grinding (of beans)
and the heating (of water)
is my religion
my faith
where i place my very
being

so to say
that i need you
like I need espresso
in the morning…
is sacred

The Greek (tanka)

Wednesday morning rush
Mr. Thermopulous knows
Dark and sweet my friend
He greets you by what you need

Charlene

the scent of moonlight was trapped in my nostrils when

chortles of the cockcrow overflowed from my ears and drowned my eyes announcing another chance

a mere man-child
my lanky limbs begged the aching between my legs to cease
but I couldn't help but think about her

she was licorice and smelled of nutmeg

breakfast was calling

my grandmother would pulverize tablespoons
of charcoaled beans
so's they'd simmer into liquid midnight

there was cornbread
honey toned like my grandma Lina
Bacon
eggs  if the chickens were layin' right

but I loved my sips of coffee best
slurping her in
her texture warm and wet
echoes of a Carolina blossom

she became my tutor
and I learned to slowly savor
the notes of bull grapes and
juniper and
oak skirted in Spanish moss

my first kiss tasted like coffee

now coffee tastes like my first kiss

Mornin' comes

And I still ache like a boy.

Coffee: A Love Story

love slave
rich-brown shot of ecstasy

you haunt me so
that I douse the tips
of my fingers in you
dampen my neck with your juices

the scent of you
cloying in my nostrils
evoking timeless pleasures

I could bathe in your waters
licking the pale rim
of your dark hole

savoring that ineffable sugar
trembling in warmth and gratification
toes curling as your essence
scalds my tongue

at least three times a day

I HATE COFFEE

Most family traditions I’ve embraced
But there are a few I’ve rejected
Maybe just for rebellion’s sake
But with sincere confession
One stands out as a family disgrace

I despise coffee with a visceral hate
Addicting black liquid Columbian speed
My family are addicts with insatiable needs
So I know all too well its addictive powers
And can testify to its damaging traits

Like so many other Norwegians and Danish
My grandfather was a caffeine fiend
A gallon a day is not an exaggeration
Not a civil word spoken till he sipped his fix
From a dainty bone china saucer dish

His son was a wonderful father to me
Yet he would abuse me verbally
Even threatening me physically
If I didn’t make his fucking coffee
“Hey, why the Hell isn’t the coffee ready?”

The abuse culminated on April’s Fools
When for the sake of entertaining
Our fellow steel mill brothers
I hid his unopened can of fucking Folgers
Till he tried to kill me with a sharp tool

So ‘To Hell’ with Lutheran Church juice
I’d rather a cup of English Earl Grey
Or Hitler’s favorite, German chamomile
Or a glass of water if tea isn’t available
Rather than drink that Devil’s hooch
