Poetry Contest

Write a poem about whatever the poem below, inspires you to write

Ok!  So I won Crim's "45 Days In Hell" competition (thank you Crim, and great writes, everyone who participated!), and I've been tagged as next to post a competition based on a poem that I wrote, as a jumping off point/inspiration for those who would like to participate.

I'm posting my poem "Once Famous", as it has all the elements I enjoy seeing work together, those being dark/morbid, humor and sadness. This is one I wrote for a previous competition based on the prompt of having to write about skeletal remains tied to a tree, and I've always been happy with how it came out, so have a read and see what it makes you feel like writing.

Any style/length poem, one week, enter as many times as you want, no collabs, winner gets to post the next comp with a poem of their own for inspiration.

GO!

Once Famous

I came upon him in the woods,
Eddie—
That’s what it said on his work shirt,
Embroidered, blue lettering.

I couldn’t tell what he looked like
While still alive,
For time had erased his flesh
And left only white bones
‘Neath the now too big clothing he wore
Propped and tied against the tree,
Our tree.

So I imagined….
Sometimes he was Eddie Van Halen,
Sometimes he was Eddie Vedder,
Once famous,
But now all mine;
My Eddie.

I always touch the hole in his skull
Before tracing my fingers down his toothy cheek.
Bullet hole, execution-style, no doubt,
But no need to notify the authorities
When you can stay here with me—
Don’t you think that’s a good idea,
Eddie?

Today I’ve brought us lunch
And I nestle in next to him
Like I always do.
I smile—
My Eddie, my secret Eddie.

I take a sip of my soda from its can
And offer some to him;
“Thirsty?  You look parched!”
That makes me giggle
And I pour some into Eddie’s mouth cavity,
But it goes right through
And wets his shirt near his ribs.

Ah, Eddie,
The world is ours…
Isn’t this nice?
We’ll stay here forever,
You and me,
And we’ll watch the sun go down on each day
Where no one knows us
As well as we do each other.

You’ll always be famous to me,
Eddie,
And I kiss him goodnight.

Once I Was Famous

Once I was famous,
Now tied to a tree with razor wire,
Eddie-
The blue lettering on my work shirt,
All that is left of my life.

Once I was more than a rockstar,
More than a megastar,
A god amongst mortals,
With crowds screaming in adulation
As I step off my private jet
And girls writhing in undulation
At the mere wave of my hand and slight grin.

But those adrenaline fuelled moments
Followed by drug binges
Are now long gone lost to time,
Hazy memories in an empty skull.
Yet when the wind rattles my hands
I remember playing the music.

While special agents still search for me
As lawyers carve up my media empire,
Long after the droning of bloated flies
And porcelain worms feasted on my flesh,
I am an unidentifiable skeleton
In a backwater town far from anywhere
With only a tree as company.

Until her.

Her, a sweet girl,
With feeling and flesh
Kindness, intelligence, and loyalty
And on the cusp of womanhood I think.
She calls me Eddie-
If only she knew.
Each goodnight kiss
From her chapped red lips to my bone white skull
Means more to me than the thousands of groupies and whores.

She kisses me goodnight,
Every night, every time
And I wait an eternity to see her again next day.
With only a tree as company.

Until her.

Both of these poems were so vivid and... frankly really cool

Sad child, sad child
now you are all alone with no one left to play
making pb n j samich's out of dirt, rocks and clay
to be eaten alone as she kneels down like daddy to angrily pray.
Sad child, sad child
with what mommy called "the family knife" how many did you slay¿
You did not have much time everafter at all before bed when night time gave way.
The sandbox is now full marking their quaint little grave
Sad child, sad child
now your all alone with no one left to play

Still Roses

There are no ghosts here
for there is no pain.
No delayed reaction
to scalpel or caress.

Their crises commenced
long ago and elsewhere.
They have already found
their way, they require
no direction nor music
of bells from me.

No smiles nor movement
shiver among these still roses.
There is only a hollow tranquility,
a tenuous serenity

as when somebody coughs
underwater.

Congrats Viddax--really cool how you wrote from Eddie's perspective, and you're up, if you want to host a comp inspired by one if your poems. Toni, Austin--congrats and thanks for joining in!

Yes, the glory is mine. *Cue enclosing clawed fist, sweep of the cloak, and blazing eyes*.
Well played to everyone else, you really took it and ran it with to wondrous levels. And thank you Madame for the inspiration, I shall maintain the legacy and host a competition.
