Why am I so often runner up?
Am I second best?
I try to present the subject
As wanted by the quest;
I look at it in another way
But try not to digress.

I sympathise with your empty nest
I also have been there
As long as you keep on good terms
At a distance, her life share

Your daughter is so precious
Treat her like your friend
Do not try to shackle her
She'll return in the end.

-A Cup Of Jo-

Look at me
Writing poetry
And for what...
A trophy?

On second thought, maybe I think too much?
I'll have mine black with two sugars.

Please!

_______-Looking into that mindful abyss-

Charming my words to you my greater eminence.

Lately though I been falling short.  Many think
I am second best.  When its not just the role of poetic elixir.  To intoxicate the readers judgment. And begin the journey of the imaginations quest.

None the less I hold all words sacred and sentence
combinations so near.  The Ebullience of my intrepid trade-craft I love to share with many and always hold so dear.

This talisman of sumptuous endearing theoretic visions. I love to carry with me from the forgotten ledges and to you the reader to enjoy.  Wherewithal the gambol and melancholy would be my ultimate missions.

In the end I excitingly deploy.

I have on trophy...
many call it a bluff,
a fluke, beginners luck...
it was my first competition,
and one wasn't enough...

I'll live I'll die,
I'll cry I'll fly.
what do you want?
I'll do it...

an under the table deal?
I'll repay you with more...
comfort, a friend,
companionship until the end...

tell me...

what do I need to do?
to get this win from you?

____________"Heartbeat and the Tableau"

Dusk with a way.  Shines of the sorrow and youth
that would play.  Out in the sun and out in the
shallows.  Firm tarnished skin and triumph that
they hallowed.

Rounded the edges and the great fields.  Never to
tire never to yield.  Only for a simple pleasure
and perhaps a short song.  Days of endless youth
seemed eternal and forever carry us along.

But all books must finish.  All sunsets shall rest.
Even the stars from the Heaven quiver upon the
reality of Gods test.

I would bend the truth
In the pursuit of sex
I would cheat on my tax returns
I would do underhanded
Business dealings
I love to win
But poetry is different
I want to write the wind
Stir a heart
Whisper a kiss
And stroke a soul
And though I can
Rhyme
Meter
And enjamb
With the best of them
I like the way I write
And I won't change it
For a fucking trophy
I'll settle for runner up
You see I'm an obscurist attention seeker anyway

Madame lavender's daughter went off to
college And now she's feeling blue
So I guess she thought why not
Start a competition or two

To push away the loneliness
To fill her time, distract her mind
To let her heart reprieve
A trophy for the prettiness
She'll think hard and find
That the trophy will go to me

Give the trophy to caxton

I beg you, Madame
give the trophy to the poet
who wants to write the wind
and you know where to find me
I'll be standing down wind
at the bar
wondering how young you like your men
while I'm rolling a cigarette
with one hand
and sipping a bourbon and dry with the other
begging real fucking hard for second or third place
because that's where I belong
almost but
not good enough.

Besides, everybody knows
all the cool poets on
deep underground
have less than 21 trophies
and one more trophy for me
and I'll be real
uncool.

So I'm going down
on both knees
beggin'
I want you
to take your hand
grab hold of that
moulded thing
that makes you squeak
scroll down
and double click
on Alexander Case
not for first
make it slow
when you get to second
and third
and I'll take you all the way
home.

Thanks for all the entries, everyone!  Looks like this will be closing in a few minutes, and as I'm off to work now, for the evening, and starting back in the classroom tomorrow morning, I'll have a winner declared sometime in the afternoon, tomorrow, for lack of time until then--stay tuned!

And the winner is..... JR!  Doooooooood!  How could I not pass up having JR as my son in law, and you're in luck--sadly, my daughter just broke up with her boyfriend this morning, super nice guy that he is....

Roach, you always crack me up, and Caxton--you deserve more than your one win so far, so runner up it is!

Great job everyone, and I wish there were more runner up spots to hand out, but alas there's not.  Thanks for playing!
