Poetry Contest

Fuck Slam It's Time To Jam! Record a kick-ass reading of one of your poems. Post your poem and the link to your audio poem here.
[CLICK HERE FOR COMP PREVIEW]>>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iI0lXTK82b8

Finger Jam is about capturing the emotion weaved in the words of poetry by giving your poem a voice. This comp is about promoting the original form of spoken word and encouraging more DU poets to record and post their poetry readings. This is not a slam poetry comp, but I encourage slam poets to forget about everything they know about the rigid slam format, rhythm, delivery and start from scratch. This is a stripped back [no videos, no music] spoken word reading of your kick-ass poem expressed the way the poem was meant to be delivered.

Comp Criteria

The Reading: Poets are to record an audio reading of their poem, upload it onto YouTube, then post it in with your poem on Deep Underground as an audio poem and then paste the link in the Finger Jam comp. All spoken word poems will be ranked and the judges will pick their 3 best readings and rank them.

The Poem: The poem must be posted along with your audio poem link in the Finger Jam comp. The poem can be new or old, comp winners or loser poems. This is a poetry comp as much as it is a spoken word comp, so your poem needs to be the best you’ve got and it needs to flow! Each judge will award 10 points to the best poem in the comp

The Pitch: Poets will have to tell me in 50 words or less, their creative vision for the spoken word video poem. Each judge will award 5 points to their favorite pitch.

Comp Details Summary:
- new and old poems, comp winners or loser poems
- one entry per poet
- audio poems are to be a max. 3 minutes long
- no collabs, no slam, no rap, no hand grenades!
- all entries will be ranked by independent judges
- extra 10 bonus points will be awarded for the best poem
- extra 5 bonus points will be awarded  for the best pitch

The Prize: The winner will have their spoken word audio poem downloaded from YouTube and made into a video poem, complete with music and video imagery produced by Alexander Case. Here are some examples of video poems to inspire your creativity for your Pitch.

Recording Tips: Make sure your recording is clear with no background noise. Don’t speak too close to the mic as this will affect the quality of the recording. If you don’t have a mic on your PC you can use a mobile phone for the recording device.

For anybody who is interested in entering the comp, but doesn't know how to make their thingy-me-bob record a what-zee-called.... here's a link to some more tips for you to decipher to have a shot at winning this comp!!!

Do you want us to post them now, or wait for details and the fine print?

Great Video.

Fine print still not loading for me ... Can the piece be a prior "winner" or are we following rules of DUP rules of etiquette - No! prior winners in your choice selection?

I'm looking to record my own images for this one so it will make a difference for me.

Ok not to sound lame here, even though I am--sorta .... First I have to sign up for a YouTube acct to try this one, and how do I tell if I have a microphone on my laptop? (yes, my techno-geekness doesn't extend much past 8 Track tapes ..)

But I can make a recording on my Canon camera and download it onto my laptop --will this work , Case, or should I just sit this one out for being a moron when it comes to electronic stuff? Lol

To clarify, no images or music allowed to enter this comp? Only the reading..?

YouTube doesn't allow vids without images (just audio does not upload), so I suggest that everyone uses one static image in their video, a jpeg file or equivalent, showing WORDS, ie, poem title and name of poet. Black background, white text, to keep things level.

Would that work within your rules, Mr Case?

ML, if you have a gmail or Google account, you can use that to log on to YouTube.

Should get you pointed in right direction for your mic. Your Canon recording will do, provided it is in a file format supported by YouTube.

As for making a vid, you can do that with an audio file and one image (if Case agrees to my suggestion).

Magdalena and Missy, thank you both for your keenness to get this comp rolling. You ladies are the queens of spoken word on DU, so I'm really stoked you're both taking part in this comp.

I've added a couple of curve balls in the criteria to push the spoken word specialists [nothing you both can't handle] and hopefully attract some solid competition, as well as get some fresh DU blood exposed to the art of spoken word.

I'm really looking forward to your entries, all the best in the comp!!! :)

Brotha LSP!!! I'm so stoked to see you on board. You know I've waiting since the Dark City comp [June 2013] to hear you rip up the mic with another smooth spoken word. If I get the Black Wolf back on the mic then my work here is done.

For the purpose of making an even playing field for all poets in the comp, I want everyone to focus on the poem and the reading. In regards to using your own images, I do encourage all poets to put their ideas down for the video in "The Pitch" to try and score the extra bonus points from the judges to better their chances in winning the comp.

The winning poet will then get to work with me to put together their own custom made video poem.

All the best in the comp!!!

You got 8 track? How cool are you!!! [But if you can't record on it ain't going to do ya much good]

ML, you're exactly the poet I want entering in this comp!!!!! Please do what Atakti tells you to do... Tank Girl can build an AK-47 from your 8 track!!!

I may need Missy, Mags and Atakti's help to put together a thread on how to make a recording and post it on YouTube from a standard PC or Laptop. I can whack something together for the Mac users.

If you're interested in having a go in the comp, but you have NFI on how to create an audio recording for YouTube, let me know an this thread and I'll sort something out.

Good question, Atakti. I don't want any photographic images used for the audio poem this time round, but for the purpose of uploading audio onto Youtube, the use of a graphic image or plain coloured background and/or the title of the poem and author will be acceptable.
